Why horror movies are the ultimate date night

Forget dinner reservations, awkward small talk and staring at each other across a table while desperately trying to think of something interesting to say. If you're looking for a date night that delivers atmosphere, adrenaline and plenty of excuses to get closer, horror movies might be the ultimate romantic activity.

There’s something strangely intimate about being scared together. A horror film creates an instant shared experience: you're both hiding behind cushions, pretending you're not frightened and silently judging the idiot who has just decided to investigate the noise coming from the basement.

Here's why horror movies make the ideal date night.

Fear can create chemistry
When you're frightened, your body goes into overdrive. Your heart rate increases, your breathing changes and adrenaline floods your system. Those physical sensations can resemble sexual arousal — which may help explain why someone can suddenly look considerably hotter halfway through The Conjuring.
Psychologists have studied this connection through the idea of misattributed arousal: essentially, your brain can sometimes associate the physiological excitement you're experiencing with the person you're with.
So if your date looks particularly attractive after a terrifying jump scare, perhaps blame the nervous system.

It's an excellent excuse to cuddle
Let's be honest: “I'm scared” is one of the oldest excuses in the dating handbook.
A horror film gives you a natural opportunity to sit closer, hold hands, or hide behind your date when things get particularly gruesome.
Of course, nobody should assume that watching a scary film automatically means physical contact is welcome. But if you're both comfortable with it, horror provides plenty of opportunities for that gradual, flirtatious closeness that can be harder to manufacture on a conventional dinner date.

You actually have something to talk about
First dates can be painfully interview-like.
What do you do? Where are you from? Where do you see yourself in five years?
A horror movie gives you something else to discuss. Which character would survive? Was the ending ridiculous? Would you actually investigate that noise? Who was the real villain?
Suddenly, you're learning about each other's personalities without conducting an interrogation.

Horror reveals a lot about someone
Are they brave? A complete wimp? Secretly fascinated by serial killers? The person who laughs during the scariest scene?
Their reaction can tell you surprisingly much.
And if they spend the entire film checking their phone, loudly explaining the plot or spoiling the ending, well… that's useful dating information too.
Ultimately, the perfect horror date isn't necessarily about finding the scariest film imaginable. It's about creating an atmosphere where you can laugh, scream, flirt and experience something together.
Because romance doesn't always need roses and candlelight.
Sometimes it needs popcorn, a dark room and a questionable decision to watch a film about a possessed doll at 11pm.
