4 Horror roleplay situations to try this Halloween

Halloween is the one time of year when being a little unhinged is practically encouraged. So why spend the evening watching someone else run away from a chainsaw when you could create your own horror story?

If you and your partner fancy adding a little fear, mystery and theatrical tension to your Halloween plans, roleplay can turn an ordinary night into something considerably darker.

The key is keeping it consensual. Decide beforehand what you're comfortable with, agree on boundaries and have a safe word or easy way to stop the scenario immediately. The scarier the storyline, the more important it is that everyone knows it's fiction.
Here are our four ideas to give your Halloween a fright in the bedroom this year.

The Zombie Apocalypse Survivors
The apocalypse has happened. Civilisation has collapsed. Two survivors have found shelter together.
Turn up your speaker and play zombie sounds, make a den of blankets and pillows, and find distraction from the horror in one another.
This roleplay is all about fucking like it could be your last time.

The Witch & The Cursed Stranger
One of you pretends to be the mysterious witch who has lived alone in the woods her whole life; the other plays a stranger claiming to have been cursed.
Unfortunately, breaking the curse isn't quite as simple as reading a spell.
Create your own fictional ingredients, magical rules and mysterious backstory. Think black candles, spell books, dramatic robes and a suspicious amount of potion-making.
You could go either way; you could tell the cursed stranger the only way to break the spell is to have sex with a witch, or, as the witch, you could curse and play with them even more.

The Monster Under the Bed
Go deliberately campy with this one.
One person is convinced something is living under the bed. The other plays the monster.
You can create an entire mythology around your creature: What does it want? Why has it appeared? What happens if someone discovers it?
This is particularly good for couples who don't take roleplay too seriously and enjoy ridiculous voices, costumes and dramatic storytelling.

The Ghost Who Won't Leave
One person has just moved into an old house.
The other is the ghost who has been haunting it for decades.
Rather than immediately revealing yourself, the ghost leaves mysterious notes, moves objects and appears in unexpected places.
Eventually, the two characters communicate — and discover that the haunting might have a surprisingly romantic explanation.
