“My date wants us to wear matching costumes — is that cute and romantic, or a bit intense for early dating?”

Sophie Blackman, our Editor-in-Chief, is answering another dating dilemma for her column, Dating Dilemmas with Soph. This week, she is answering whether it is too soon to wear a couple’s costume for Halloween early in a relationship.
One VavaViolet Magazine reader asked Sophie: “My date wants us to wear matching costumes — is that cute and romantic, or a bit intense for early dating?”

Sophie answered:
Honestly? It could be either — and the difference is how they’re approaching it.
Matching Halloween costumes can be ridiculously cute. There’s something undeniably romantic about choosing a ridiculous little outfit together, taking photos and committing to the bit. If you’re both enthusiastic, it can be a fun way to create your own couple tradition without taking yourselves too seriously.
But if your first reaction was “Wait… are we a couple-couple already?”, don’t ignore that feeling.
Early dating is all about figuring out each other’s comfort zones. You might be perfectly happy spending Halloween together but not quite ready to announce yourselves as a matching-costume unit to the world. And that's completely reasonable.
The important question is whether your date sees the costume as a fun Halloween idea or a relationship milestone.
If they’re saying, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we went as vampires together?” — adorable. If they’re insisting you coordinate outfits, post couple photos and behave like you’ve been together for three years when you’ve had four dates — that’s when I’d pause.
You also don't have to reject the idea entirely. Suggest something that feels playful without screaming WE ARE OFFICIALLY A PACKAGE DEAL. Matching colours, complementary costumes or characters from the same film can give you the couple energy without going full relationship announcement.
And remember: saying no doesn't mean you’re rejecting them. You’re simply setting the pace that feels comfortable for you.
My verdict? Matching costumes are cute when they’re mutual, playful and low-pressure. If it feels like a test of your commitment, however, swap the costume conversation for an actual conversation.
Halloween should involve dressing up — not pretending you’re further into the relationship than you really are.
