Halloween flings: The do’s and don’ts

Halloween is the perfect excuse to flirt with strangers, kiss someone in a questionable costume, and make questionable romantic decisions in the dark. Between haunted-house dates, late-night Halloween parties, and cocktails that taste suspiciously like regret, spooky season practically begs for a little romantic chaos.

But before you mistake a vampire’s smouldering stare for true love, here are the do’s and don’ts of navigating a Halloween fling without becoming the main character in your own romantic horror story.

DO: Embrace the Halloween meet-cute
Whether you meet someone at a pumpkin patch, a fancy-dress party or while screaming your lungs out in a haunted attraction, Halloween offers endless opportunities to strike up a conversation. Compliment their costume, ask about their favourite horror film or use a terrible Halloween pickup line to break the ice. Even if the chemistry fizzles, at least you tried.

DON’T: Confuse lust with love
There is something undeniably attractive about someone dressed as a vampire, a gothic villain or your favourite fictional monster. However, looking hot in eyeliner and a cape doesn't automatically make someone relationship material. Enjoy the butterflies, but remember that a Halloween fling doesn't need to become a full-blown romance.

DO: Be honest about what you want
Are you looking for a casual hookup, a Halloween date or someone to cuddle while watching horror films? Whatever your intentions, communicate them. Nobody wants to discover on November 1 that their supposedly casual fling has been planning your imaginary wedding since the first pumpkin-spiced cocktail.

DON’T: Treat costumes as consent
A revealing outfit, a cheeky costume or a flirtatious attitude is not an invitation to touch someone without permission. Ask before kissing, respect boundaries and remember that consent matters just as much at a Halloween party as it does anywhere else.

DO: Make safety part of the fantasy
Meet somewhere public initially, tell a trusted friend where you're going and arrange your own way home. If alcohol is involved, know your limits and keep an eye on your drink. Spooky season should be about exciting memories, not situations that leave you feeling unsafe.

DON’T: Ghost someone just because the decorations come down
Casual doesn't mean careless. If you don't want to see someone again after Halloween, send a brief, respectful message rather than disappearing into the night like a budget Dracula. You don't owe anyone a relationship, but basic courtesy goes a long way.

DO: Have fun without demanding a happy ending
Not every fling needs to turn into a relationship, and not every kiss needs a sequel. Sometimes, a Halloween romance is simply a brilliant night, a memorable story and a reminder that flirting can be fun.
The golden rule? Enjoy the mystery, communicate your boundaries and keep your expectations realistic. Your Halloween fling might become a November romance, or it might be nothing more than a deliciously chaotic seasonal adventure.
Either way, make sure the only thing haunting you afterwards is the memory of how good they looked in that costume.
