Who needs a boyfriend when you've got your best witches? Halloween is the perfect excuse to gather your favourite girls, pour the drinks, gossip about your latest dating disasters and spend an evening embracing your inner ghoul. Whether you're single, loved-up, situationship-struck or recovering from a man, a Halloween girls' night is the ultimate excuse to celebrate friendship.
Forget expensive club nights and overcrowded pubs. This year, we're staying in, getting spooky and making memories that might be slightly embarrassing by morning. Here's how to host a Halloween girls' evening worthy of the ultimate coven.
1. Set the scene for your coven
Every respectable coven needs an atmosphere. Think gothic glamour meets haunted Victorian mansion, with black candles, fake cobwebs, plastic skeletons and pumpkins scattered around the room.
For a more sophisticated aesthetic, stick to a black-and-white colour scheme, adding silver skulls, dark roses and dramatic lace tablecloths. If you're feeling particularly witchy, create a makeshift altar with crystals, tarot cards and mysterious-looking bottles.
Lighting is everything. Swap bright overhead lights for lamps, fairy lights and battery-operated candles to create a cosy, spooky atmosphere. Bonus points if your playlist sounds like something you'd hear while entering a vampire's castle.
2. Establish a dress code
Why waste an opportunity to dress up? Ask everyone to arrive in their best Halloween-inspired outfit, whether that's a gothic vampire, a glamorous witch, a naughty devil or a resurrected Hollywood horror icon.
You could even introduce a theme, such as sexy supernatural, dead celebrities or villains we'd absolutely date. Encourage everyone to go all out with dramatic makeup, black lipstick, glitter and elaborate accessories.
Make it competitive by hosting a costume contest with categories including Best Dressed Ghoul, Most Likely to Haunt Her Ex and Hottest Creature of the Night.
The prize? A bottle of prosecco, a spooky goodie bag or the honour of choosing the next horror film.
3. Serve spooky cocktails and wicked treats
No girls' night is complete without snacks. Transform your kitchen into a Halloween-themed cocktail bar and let everyone become their own mixologist.
Serve blood-red mocktails made with cranberry juice and lemonade, blackcurrant spritzers or cocktails decorated with gummy worms and plastic-free spooky garnishes. Label your drinks with names such as Witch's Brew, Vampire's Kiss and Exorcise My Ex.
For food, think miniature pizzas shaped like ghosts, chocolate-dipped strawberries decorated as little monsters, pumpkin-shaped biscuits and a generous cheese board.
Want to make things more entertaining? Ask everyone to bring a snack inspired by their favourite horror film. Just don't blame us if somebody arrives with a Silence of the Lambs-inspired dish.
4. Play games that expose everyone's dark secrets
Halloween is the ideal opportunity to discover just how unhinged your friendship group really is.
Start with Never Have I Ever: Halloween Edition, featuring confessions about drunken Halloween kisses, texting exes after midnight and questionable costume choices.
Next, try a game of Who's Most Likely To? with categories such as who's most likely to marry a millionaire, fall in love with a fictional vampire or accidentally summon something during a tarot reading.
For a more reflective activity, hold a mini tarot-reading session. Treat it as entertainment rather than a guaranteed prediction of the future, and let everyone interpret the cards together.
And, naturally, no girls' night would be complete without a brutally honest relationship debrief. Discuss your latest crushes, analyse those suspicious text messages and collectively decide whether that man deserves another chance.
5. Organise a horror movie marathon
Once the cocktails have been poured and the gossip has reached dangerous levels, settle down for a horror movie marathon.
For gothic romance, try Bram Stoker's Dracula. For supernatural scares, choose The Craft. If your group prefers psychological horror, Black Swan offers plenty of unsettling atmosphere and conversation afterwards.
Prepare blankets, popcorn and enough snacks to survive the apocalypse. You could even introduce a drinking game using soft drinks, with everyone taking a sip whenever a character makes an obviously terrible decision.
6. Create a Halloween photo booth
No event is complete without photographic evidence. Create a corner with a black backdrop, fake spiderwebs, Halloween props and dramatic lighting.
Encourage everyone to take group pictures, solo portraits and ridiculous costume shots. You could even recreate iconic horror film posters or take glamorous, gothic photographs worthy of a magazine cover.
For the final touch, create a shared album so everyone can upload their favourite moments.
7. End the night with a coven tradition
Before everyone leaves, introduce a little ritual to mark the occasion. Write down something you want to leave behind before the new season, whether it's an unfulfilling situationship, a bad habit or the tendency to settle for less than you deserve.
Keep the notes private, tear them up and throw them away as a symbolic fresh start.
Because ultimately, Halloween isn't just about ghosts, ghouls and questionable men dressed as vampires. It's about celebrating the people who make life more fun.
So gather your witches, pour another drink and remember: men may come and go, but your coven is forever.
