Hobosexual habits: How to spot a financial parasite who only wants you for your home

Another hidden cost for women? Thanks to the cost-of-living and social housing crises, men are relying on women for housing and financial support, and this is negatively impacting female mental health outcomes and financial growth. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “we cannot negotiate with people who say what's mine is mine and what's yours is negotiable," and that is exactly what a hobosexual does.

Here are five warning signs to help you spot a hobosexual and save yourself from the pain of being financially drained.

  1. Narcissistic Tendencies - Narcissists can be identified by their sense of self-importance, lack of empathy and entitled behaviour. In real-life scenarios, this could look like dominating conversations, difficulty apologising or a complete inability to acknowledge bad behaviour. For Hobosexuals, this translates to refusing to contribute in meaningful ways and denying or escalating attempts at healthy communication to fix the issue.

  2. Emotional Immaturity - Hobosexuals do not want to grow up. They have persistent Peter Pan syndrome and become overly dependent on the women they enter relationships with, using weaponised incompetence to avoid contributing, whether that is financially or around the home. Do you do absolutely everything because you know it won’t be done properly otherwise? This is to continually reinforce the idea that they need you, making you empathetic to their helplessness rather than seeing it for what it is, exploitative manipulation.

  3. Lovebombing - Manipulation is a core tenet of the hobosexual handbook. Financial predators often have poor boundaries, and their relationships escalate at a faster pace because they want to embed themselves within your life before you have the chance to notice the glaring red flags. To achieve this, they lovebomb their partners to get whatever they want. There is an overlap between hobosexuals and coercive controlling behaviour because material gain is the entire purpose of the relationship. Do not let them move into your home, I repeat, do not let them move into your home.

  4. Mummy Issues - Hobosexuals are often the male counterpart to the girls they themselves refer to as “Daddy Issues.” The irony. They typically look for a replacement mother figure to take care of them.  Obviously, in this day and age, I think it’s fair to say that a lot of us come with our own respective trauma; no one is perfect, so this should be taken into consideration with the other elements on this list. Having a bad relationship with your mum doesn’t inherently guarantee that you’re a hobosexual, but if you’re depending on your partner financially and they are also predominantly responsible for taking care of everything at home, what do you contribute?

  5. Avoidant Personality Type - Just to add insult to injury, hobosexuals tend to be insecure and struggle with emotional intimacy. So in addition to financially supporting them, you are also expected to prioritise their emotional needs at all times. This means that they really are out here, providing nothing but the audacity, yet women everywhere are still lapping it up. Girl, RUN. What are you getting out of the relationship?
