What is cobwebbing? Halloween's newest dating trend, explained

Forget ghosting. This spooky season, singles are dealing with something even messier: cobwebbing.

And no, it has absolutely nothing to do with cleaning the corners of your bedroom.

Cobwebbing is the process of clearing out the emotional cobwebs left behind by previous relationships. Think deleting your ex's number, finally throwing away that hoodie they left at your house and stopping yourself from checking their Instagram at 2am. Essentially, it is about letting go of romantic baggage so you can make room for something new.
Because sometimes, the scariest thing in your life isn't a horror film. It's the person you should have blocked six months ago.

Why are we talking about cobwebbing?
Modern dating has made it ridiculously easy to keep exes within reach. A quick scroll through Instagram can reveal what your former situationship had for dinner, who they are dating and whether they have suddenly developed a personality since dumping you.
Even when a relationship ends, the digital reminders can linger.
Perhaps you still have screenshots of their messages, an old dating-app conversation you occasionally revisit or a playlist that transports you straight back to your romantic downfall. These seemingly harmless reminders can make it harder to move forward.
Cobwebbing encourages you to recognise those attachments and decide whether they still deserve space in your life.

How do you start cobwebbing?
First, conduct an honest audit of your romantic past. Are you keeping an ex around because you genuinely want a friendship, or are you secretly hoping they will realise you were the best thing that ever happened to them?
Be honest.
Next, clear out the digital clutter. Mute their social media, archive old conversations and stop treating their online activity like an episode of True Detective. You do not need to know who watched their Instagram Story or whether their new girlfriend looks like you.
Finally, make room for yourself. Reconnect with friends, try something new and remember what makes you happy outside a relationship.

Is it time to sweep out your ex?
Cobwebbing is not about pretending your past never happened. It is about recognising when something has stopped serving you.
You can appreciate an old relationship without keeping the door permanently open. And you can miss somebody without inviting them back into your life.
This Halloween, perhaps the biggest red flag is not a man dressed as a vampire promising to suck your blood.
It's the ex who keeps sucking up your emotional energy.
So grab the metaphorical broom, clear the cobwebs and stop letting yesterday's heartbreak haunt tomorrow's potential.
