Why you should start watching porn with your partner - and how to bring it up

Porn is usually treated like something you do behind a locked bathroom door, with your headphones in and absolutely no eye contact afterwards. But what if watching it with your partner could actually become part of your sex life?
For some couples, watching adult content together can be a way of exploring fantasies, opening up conversations about sex and discovering what turns each other on. It doesn't have to mean your relationship is lacking — sometimes it can simply add another layer of curiosity.

It can make talking about sex easier
Saying, “This is something I’d like to try,” can feel ridiculously awkward. Watching something together can give you a starting point.
Rather than explaining a fantasy from scratch, you can talk about what you both think about the scenario, dynamic, or atmosphere you're watching. You might discover that something you assumed your partner would find strange is actually something they're curious about too.
And equally, you might discover that something isn't your thing. That's useful information, too.

It can break you out of a routine
Long-term relationships can sometimes fall into predictable patterns. You know what happens, when it happens and approximately how the whole thing is going to go.
Watching something together can introduce novelty without requiring either person to act on it immediately.
Think of it as inspiration rather than instructions. Porn is entertainment, not a relationship manual — bodies, expectations and performances on screen don't necessarily reflect real-life sex.

But how do you actually bring it up?
Don't spring it on your partner halfway through an argument or while they're scrolling through their phone.
Choose a relaxed moment and keep it casual. You could say:
“Would you ever be interested in watching something together? I think it could be fun to see what we both like.”
The important bit? Make it an invitation, not an expectation.
Your partner might be enthusiastic. They might be curious but nervous. Or they might have absolutely no interest whatsoever. All three responses are valid.
If you're both interested, talk about boundaries before pressing play. What kinds of content are comfortable? Is anything completely off-limits? Are you both genuinely happy to stop at any point?
And remember: watching porn together should be something you both want to do.
Because the hottest part isn't necessarily what's happening on screen. It's being able to talk honestly about sex without feeling like you're auditioning for a role in it.
