The intimacy co-ordinator behind the latest season of Euphoria has revealed that cast members were “pushed” to go further emotionally and physically while filming the show’s increasingly explicit scenes.
Discussion around the HBO drama’s third season has been dominated by backlash over its graphic content, with viewers criticising several controversial storylines involving characters played by Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya and Hunter Schafer.
Speaking on the In the Envelope podcast, intimacy co-ordinator Mam Smith addressed the debate surrounding the show’s latest episodes, which many fans have described as far more explicit than previous seasons.
Smith explained that the actors were asked to be “so vulnerable” during filming, adding that creating a safe environment on set became essential throughout production. “These actors were pushed,” Smith said, while clarifying that the production worked carefully to ensure performers still felt supported and protected during intimate scenes.
The comments come as season three continues to divide audiences online. Much of the controversy has centred on Cassie Howard’s new OnlyFans storyline, which includes several provocative scenes that have sparked criticism across social media.
Despite the backlash, Smith also criticised the wider television industry’s increasing reliance on graphic intimacy, saying there should be “more creative ways” to portray sex onscreen rather than constantly escalating explicit content.
The role of intimacy coordinators has become standard across major film and television productions following the #MeToo movement, with networks including HBO introducing mandatory safeguards for productions involving nudity or sex scenes.
Interestingly, Sydney Sweeney previously praised the show’s production team for respecting her boundaries, revealing in earlier interviews that creator Sam Levinson agreed to remove scenes she felt were unnecessarily nude.
