The female pop revolution is here, and we are so ready for it! For too long, we have been relying on female rappers for their unapologetic, explicit lyrics, and finally, we are seeing this enter mainstream pop music.
Here are five pop stars who are centring sex and female empowerment within their music.
Chappell Roan
A proud lesbian and advocate for queer visibility, her sexually charged lyrics speak to women everywhere.
In our opinion, Roan’s storytelling through her lyrics is unparalleled, and that stems from her unapologetic nature.
There is no room for sexual shame in Chappell Roan’s world unless it is being explored thematically within her music.
The country-pop banger Red Wine Supernova references group sex and makes it fun, asking, “Do you like magic? I’ve got a wand and a rabbit.”
If you’re unsure about a friends-with-benefits situation? Listen to Casual. Do you have an unhealthy relationship with an ex? Listen to Coffee.
Sabrina Carpenter
If Sabrina Carpenter’s icon status was ever in doubt, her recent performance of "Like a Prayer" with Madonna secured it.
Labelled this generation’s Marilyn Monroe, Carpenter’s status as a sex symbol is rising, yet the filmic quality of her music videos is clearly tailored to the female gaze.
The second single off her latest album, Tears serves both as a sexual empowerment anthem and an infomercial for men on what women really want: “I get wet at the thought of you being a responsible guy…assemble a chair from IKEA, I’m like oh my god.”
The music video also references the cult classic musical, Rocky Horror, which is notorious for its sexual expressionism.
JADE
LGBTQIA+ Icon and ex-Little Mix member JADE is set to be the UK’s next pop icon, having just completed her first sellout solo tour in the US.
Her album, “That’s Showbiz Baby!” explores themes of sexual empowerment and self-liberation while reflecting on her time within the music industry.
The second single from the album, Fantasy, speaks of “passion, pain, pleasure, no shame” in the chorus, and the surprise single Midnight Cowboy similarly requests, “no vanilla, let’s experiment.”
JADE also commissioned her own line of sex toys featuring butt plugs, lubricant, and beaded thongs, demonstrating that she definitely knows her audience!
Charli XCX
Brat summer may be over, but Charli XCX is just beginning. Even though she is currently exploring rock music, she will always be a dance-pop diva to us, and the success of her 2024 album lingers in the changed attitudes of women everywhere.
The Brat identity is depicted as unapologetic and chaotic, using unfiltered honesty to question social standards for women and girls and challenge the idea of perfectionism that plagues our culture. What is more girl power than that?
Billie Eilish
Our outspoken girl loves talking about sex in her interviews, previously having made headlines for describing how she likes to masturbate in front of a mirror to build body confidence.
Her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, was released as an exploration of sexuality and features the song Lunch, which compares oral sex to devouring a meal.
It’s also fair to say that no one has forgotten the award-winning collaboration between Eilish and Charli XCX on Guess, which sees them both atop a mountain of underwear that was later donated to women’s charity I Support the Girls.
