50 Shades of Grey cast a bland shadow over the world of erotic fiction for years, but Jodi Ellen Malpas is the author who is bringing word porn back from the dead.
So, what's it about?
The Protector is written by Jodi Ellen Malpas, a New York Times bestselling author who has perfectly nailed bringing hot alpha men to life.
This epic love story follows Camile Logan, a glamorous London model who is used to being stalked by the paparazzi, appearing in magazine adverts and is frequently stopped for autographs.
She walks freely around as she pleases until her overbearing and powerful businessman father hires her a bodyguard, Jake Sharp, and it's not long before Camile falls deeply head over heels for the hunky former SAS sniper who has many secrets hidden between his biceps and sleeves.
But with many twists and steamy sex scenes between these pages, the pair have some terrifying demons to overcome in the form of gangs, drug addictions and blackmail.
Review
For some bizarre reason, many of us adore a bad boy, but dealing with them is tiring, so the best way (and safest) to get your fix is to pick up a book and live vicariously.
In The Protector, Jodi has created the perfect blend of a bad boy. You'd love to hate him, but you just can't.
Jake Sharp, I initially hated his character due to his smug attitude, and I couldn't help but feel irritated by the way he treated women. But he quickly grew on me.
Jake's character will be like Marmite to you. He will either grip you, and you'll want to turn page after page to discover his secrets, or his first approach of being a smug prick will turn you off completely. But I'm glad I stuck it out, as his and heroine Camile's characters are actually quite in-depth and have a lot of layers to them.
This book has had a ton of, to be frank, really shit reviews. However, personally, I loved the thrill of the action mixed in with some incredibly detailed and graphic sex scenes.
For me, it was exactly what I wanted 50 Shades of Grey to be, but undoubtedly better. Unlike Christian Grey, Jake isn't controlling, and it's a story of two people who have incredible chemistry and not just in the bedroom.
For the majority of the book, you watch as Camile and Jake try their absolute hardest to resist each other and remain strictly professional. For me, it was the epitome of romance.
Conclusion
If 50 Shades disappointed you and you want something to daydream over, I'd add this one to your bookshelf. Or if you find porn boring or demeaning to women and want to return to good old-fashioned erotica, this one will undoubtedly get you in the mood.
It's a 4/5 from me.
